The articles in this issue by Reilly and Alig et al. have focused primarily on the potential impacts of climate change in the agriculture and forest sectors, respectively. However, as discussed in the introductory article by Sohngen and McCarl, agriculture and forestry could also play a role in actions to mitigate greenhouse gases (GHGs) and forestall the threat of climate change. This article provides a brief overview of the types of agricultural and forestry activities that could be undertaken to sequester or reduce GHG emissions as well as their technical and economic potential to offset emissions from other sectors of the economy. The coeffects of these mitigation actions on other (nonclimate) environmental outcomes are discussed in the article by Feng, Kling, and Gassman.

Modeling Alternative Policies for Forestry and Agricultural Bioenergy Production and GHG Mitigation
A key consideration for development of energy and climate policy affecting the forestry and agricultural sectors is that the selection of specific mechanisms implemented to achieve bioenergy production and/or greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation targets may have substantial effects on landowner incentives to adopt alternative practices. For instance, the prices of allowances and offsets are expected...
متن کاملCreating a Role for Agriculture and Forestry in Emerging Carbon Markets
Encouraging agricultural and forestry carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas mitigation is a necessary tool to meet U.S. emissions targets at minimum cost, but implementation challenges have relegated the agriculture and forestry sector to a marginal role in national and international cap-and-trade and energy policies, including those currently being discussed by U.S. legislators. However, the...
متن کاملEcological Capability Evaluation of Sharui Watershed for Forestery Land Us by Makhdoom Model and AHP Method
Forests areas of Iran in comparison with the world is very low and this low area is in demolition threat always. Hence, the remainder of these forests should be managed based on ecological capability evaluation. With regard to importance of subject, ecological capability for forestry in the Sharui watershed, Khuzestan province, was evaluated in 2015. For this purpose, the Makhdoom model and AHP...

Analysis of global emissions , carbon intensity and efficiency
greenhouse gas (gHg) emissions from agriculture, including crop and livestock production, forestry and associated land use changes, are responsible for a significant fraction of anthropogenic emissions. using data from a new gHg global database developed at FAO, we focus on global indicator trends in the agriculture sectors, in relation to the carbon intensity of key food commodities. in partic...
